MOBILE & WIRELESS TRADE MISSION
3 – 7 JULY 2006
Where: Japan (Tokyo & Osaka)
Deadline for applications: (12th May 2006)
As part of its support for UK companies in the development of trade links with Japan, UK Trade and Investment is planning to organise a business delegation to the country focusing on mobile & wireless technologies. Business meetings and seminars will be held in Tokyo and Osaka. There will be an opportunity for companies to develop their own schedules of business meetings outside the formal programme.
Market Dynamics
Japan is arguably the most advanced wireless market in the world.
- Subscribers of mobile phones reached 91 million at the end of March 2006 and fully commercial 3G services have over 45 million customer* at the end of the same period.
- Handset technologies are advancing quickly with the inclusion of small hard drives and smart cards. Mobile music, the Chaku Uta full song download services and m-payment systems point the way to new uses of phones.
- Wireless connections including mobile and wireless LAN are starting to be introduced to create the ‘ubiquitous society’.
- Japanese companies are already investigating the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technologies for replacing barcodes as a means of tracking inventory.
Support Provided & Cost of Participation
The mission will visit Tokyo and Osaka and the cost of participation is £200 (VAT inclusive) per company, invoiced following acceptance on the mission. Benefits from participation include:
Mission Briefing: The British Embassy in Tokyo will brief companies on how to do business in Japan and on the mobile sector. A generic written sector report will also be provided where available.
Mission Seminar in Tokyo: The aim will be to give companies the opportunity to speak to an audience of invited professionals, to showcase their skills and to build or enhance a network of contacts. Clear differentiation from competing technology will be the key to success in Japan, which should be explained in the seminar session.
With the help of the British Embassy in Tokyo and the Consulate Generals office in Osaka we anticipate that the audience will consist of representatives from telecommunications services and distribution companies as well as the media.
Networking Reception: The British Embassy in Tokyo will host networking receptions on behalf of the mission members. Companies may nominate customers or potential customers and partners or potential partner companies for invitation to these receptions.
One-to-one Meetings: Companies will receive up to maximum of 4 meetings, which will depend on individual requirements. Meetings will be organised by a specialist company within the Japanese mobile market.
Group Meetings: In Osaka we plan to organise a group visit to a few leading Japanese companies (handset manufacturers, carriers, system integration companies or content developers) where mission members may be requested to brief on their technologies and products with the audience from relevant divisions at the company.
Publicity: A brochure will be prepared in English and Japanese and widely circulated throughout the Japanese industry and trade press in advance of the mission's arrival in country. Although this cannot be guaranteed, in the past, the Embassy has released press information, held press conferences and organised one-on-one interviews with local journalists.
Travel Grant: You may be eligible for a travel grant under the Market Visit Support Scheme. Terms & conditions can be found on the application form.
Travel and accommodation
Mission members are responsible for booking and paying for their own travel, including use of in-market public transport.Hotels will be block booked at British Embassy rates.

MARKET VISIT TO USA - CHICAGO, DALLAS/AUSTIN
AND SAO PAULO - BRAZIL, 4 – 14 June 2006
Deadline for applications: (11th May 2006)
UK Trade & Investment is planning a market visit to the USA with an option of going on to Brazil this June.
GlobalComm replaces Supercomm as the TIA’s (Telecommunications Industry of America) exhibition and conference event of the year. With over 450 exhibitors and 20,000 visitors expected it is where the entire buying/selling chain for the global information and communications technology industry converges.
Both Austin and Dallas are key centres for the wireless communication sector in the US.With more than 120 wireless companies, Austin is leading the wireless future where voice, data and digital media converge on embedded and open wireless platforms. These companies represent the entire value chain from research and development to production of materials, chips, hardware, software, systems and delivery of services.
The critical mass is taking shape largely because of the infrastructure now available to companies in cellular, Wi-Fi, WiMax, UWB, Zigbee, WUSB, satellite and more. The time is therefore right for UK wireless technology companies to attempt to establish business relationships within this growing sector in the Austin/Dallas area and consider opportunities around GlobalComm, where organised UK events will be held.
Brazil
The UK is Brazil's ninth largest supplier and our most important trading partner in Latin America, with UK exports valued at £792m in 2004.
Most of the leading equipment telecommunications companies have either manufacturing or supply operations in place servicing the operators. Companies operating in the market include; Alcatel, LG, Siemens, Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, Nortel, Cisco and Lucent.Contract manufacturers are also present and include Solectron, SCI, Flextronics, Celestica, Jabil and Bench Mark and mainly based in the Sao Paulo/Campinas high-tech corridor. There are also numerous Brazilian contract manufacturers.
Who should take part?
Companies in wireless/mobile technology with serious intentions of tackling the US and/or Brazilian markets.
